    Despite the huge amount of choice when it comes to cleansers - juice fasts, kidney cleanses, the Master Cleanse lemonade diet), etc. etc. a liver detox diet is one you should consider first.

    You’ve no doubt heard it all before - your body is full of toxins (causing excess weight) mostly because of what we consume on a regular basis - this includes coffee (acid forming); fast food, prepared food (has lots of hidden wheat, msg, sugar and salt); heavy metals (think of fish in the ocean), hormones from animal products, even fruit and vegetables are subjected to pecticides that eventually clog up our body.

    A lot of people want to cleanse their colon and then get on with their life. This is certainly admirable but our bodies need more than that. A successful cleanse means that the liver, kidneys, bowels and skin are all eliminating on a regular basis but also that the actual cells in your body be able to “dump” their excess waste into the bodies waste removal system easily and regularly. This means that your body would appreciate a deep cleaning at least once every twelve months.

    Start with the liver!

    Here’s a simple liver detox diet:

    Drink fresh raw beetroot juice every day (see paragraph below)
    No meat or fish during this time
    Eat whole grains (brown rice, millett, barley, buckwheat, quinoa, etc.)
    Eat steamed veggies or lightly sauteed in a wok
    Eat fresh fruit or fresh fruit juice
    Drink plenty of good quality water - at least 2 litres a day
    You can also drink herbal tea (without sugar)
    Refrain from tea, coffee, dairy (that means milk, eggs, cheese, yoghurt, etc.), sugar and white flour and wheat if you can

    Beetroot juice is very powerful so it’s best to start with a small amount (maybe as little as a quarter of a cup) and then increase this every day. Beetroot stimulates the cells of the liver while protecting it and the bile ducts. If you don’t have a juicer, you can grate raw beetroot and then cover it with water for at least 20 minutes. Strain and drink the ‘water’.

    Do this for a week and your liver will thank you.
