• Ayurveda is an ancient system of healing in India and is now so well known that there are Ayurvedic practitioners in many countries outside India, including North America. Basically, from an Ayurveda standpoint, your health depends on your food and your lifestyle and food is also used as medicine to balance you.

There are three main body types – called doshas - and you can be one type or a combination of two or even all three types – though the latter is rare.

There are many ways to detox your body, from using colon cleansers, going on a detox diet or using massage and body wraps at a spa of your choice. Fairly new to our shores is Japanese detox. This is a method of eliminating toxins by wearing foot pads on your feet while you sleep.

This may seem a bit weird, to say the least, but in Asia millions of these foot pads are sold every month. Due to this success, these pads are now available in North America. They are often referred to as Japanese detox foot pads as they originated in Japan.

Toxins accumulate in our body every day. Unfortunately we live in a polluted world and our air, food and water is subject to harmful chemicals. This is the reason that detox and colon cleansing have become so popular. Often our body can’t cope with this toxic overload and needs extra help.

  • Have you heard of the Lemonade Diet? This has a nice ring to it. Actually it’s a plan to rid your body of toxins and in particular to cleanse your colon. It is often referred to as the “Master Cleanse”.

Stanley Burroughs invented this in 1941 in Hawaii. He was a naturopathic doctor. Naturally many people have tried this diet or cleanse since then. There are many good reviews about it and also quite a few bad ones.

This diet is really simple and easy to do. These are the ingredients: 10oz water, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 2 tablespoons maple syrup and just a pinch of cayenne pepper. This recipe is only for one glass - your need six to ten glasses each day you are on the diet (ten days is best). That is all you have. You can enjoy lots of good quality fresh water and also herbal tea, but no actual food. Apparently this drink has all the nutrients you need.

Ayurveda is an ancient natural healing system that has been used for many centuries in India. Thankfully Ayurveda (or Ayurvedic medicine as it is also known) is now popular all over the world. It is a unique but very down to earth healing art.

When we look at colon health, Ayurveda considers the eating and digestion first. Elimination, of course, is also addressed, but let’s face it, we eat, digest and then eliminate. Therefore diet is a number one consideration, and then colon cleansing herbs.

Although you have the choice of many colon cleansing herbs, such as licorice root, slippery elm bark, marshmallow and rhubarb root, ayruvedic medicine comes from India where it has been practiced for centuries and their herb of choice is triphala.

Let’s start at the beginning with Ayurveda. Ayur means life and Veda means science so Ayurveda means basically the science of life. Originally, thousands of years ago, all aspects of ayurvedic medicine was written down in Sanskrit and that not only included detailed information about hundreds of herbs, their description and use but also how to perform various surgeries! Dr. Deepak Chopra has done much in North America to promote Ayurvedic medicine.

  • Your body is made up of many organs and systems and unfortunately most of them have harmful toxins. This is why a complete body detox is important.

Many of us know about colon cleansing and indeed it’s a very important cleanse to do as this is where the body can eliminate toxins from the body. However, the liver and kidneys are also compromised. The job of these two organs is to filter and if the body is in serious need of a detox, you can be sure that the liver and kidneys are ‘clogged’ with excess waste and can only partially do their job. This is why these organs should also be addressed.

  • The acai berry has been the new kid on the block for many months now. It comes from Brazil where it is harvested. It comes in many forms, including acai berry powder, capsules, supplement form and juice. Make sure when you buy any of these products that they are from the purest forms of the berry. Organic, of course, is best.

If you order on the internet, they will be shipped to your door, otherwise visit your local health food store.

More about the acai berry. It has more antioxidants than blueberries, pomegranates, grapes and also more than exotic fruits such as mangosteen, noni or even gogi. It is high in protein, essential fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and fiber.

  • Despite the huge amount of choice when it comes to cleansers - juice fasts, kidney cleanses, the Master Cleanse lemonade diet), etc. etc. a liver detox diet is one you should consider first.

You’ve no doubt heard it all before - your body is full of toxins (causing excess weight) mostly because of what we consume on a regular basis - this includes coffee (acid forming); fast food, prepared food (has lots of hidden wheat, msg, sugar and salt); heavy metals (think of fish in the ocean), hormones from animal products, even fruit and vegetables are subjected to pecticides that eventually clog up our body.
